PLANE Organizes Workshop to Enhance Education Delivery in Jigawa

By Ali Ali Rabi'u Jigawa

The Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) organized a workshop at the Management Development Institute (MDI) in Dutse, Jigawa State. The workshop, held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, brought together state and non-state actors to discuss ways to improve teaching and learning in Jigawa State.

According to Suleiman Koki, the objectives of the workshop were to interface with state partners and advocate for the provision of more Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) to schools to support children's learning. And to persuade the state to provide more financial support to School Support Officers (SSOs) to enable them conduct regular and effective School Support Visits (SSVs) each term.

Dr. Sani Abdullahi Gumel presented an overview of PLANE's support to the state, which includes: Development of a customized tool to conduct observation of lesson notes, training of 109 SSOs six times within the period under review, training of 66 master trainers, which led to the selection of 16 best SSOs, 109 SSOs across 751 schools received 2000 each person visit, and each SSO is expected to visit assigned schools three times a week, and 1962 teachers were trained within the period under review.

In his presentation, Isa Mustapha revealed that a survey conducted across Local Education Authority (LEA) stores discovered learning materials lying idle, unable to reach end-users due to lack of mobility and very poor allocation to LEA as overhead.

The workshop identified several advocacy points, including: Advocating to Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen to support schools with TLMs, as seen in Dutse and Jahun LGAs. Emphasizing the need to provide SSOs with mobility, similar to the practice in the agricultural and medical sectors. Requesting an urgent review of LEA overhead costs, which are currently grossly inadequate.

Providing ID cards for SSOs for easy identification due to security concerns. And training planning departments within the education sector on PLANE's processes and procedures for receiving and disbursing learning materials.

The workshop emphasized the importance of inter-ministry agency collaboration and synergy to avoid duplication of services. Participants also discussed developing an advocacy message to share with the government through its social media handles.

The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to share ideas and develop strategies for improving education delivery in Jigawa State. By working together, stakeholders can address the challenges facing the education sector and improve learning outcomes for students.
