The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) Foundation has sponsored eye cataract surgery for over 3,000 people in Jigawa State. The program, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Government, took place at the General Hospital Eye Care Center on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
According to Dr. Abdullahi Idris of Rashid Shekoni Hospital, cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Symptoms include: Blurry or cloudy vision, Double vision or ghosting, Fading or yellowing of colors, Sensitivity to light, Difficulty seeing at night, and Frequent changes in glasses prescription.
Dr. Idris emphasized that surgery is the most effective treatment for cataracts, where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, significantly improving vision and quality of life.
"We urge people to prioritize their eye health by seeking medical attention if they experience any symptoms," Dr. Idris advised. "Early detection and treatment can make a huge difference in preventing vision loss."
The cataract patients expressed their gratitude to the NNPCL Foundation and the Jigawa State Government for their humanitarian aid, commending their tireless efforts to improve the lives of citizens.
