Jigawa Charts New Course in Climate Change Mitigation with Policy Development

In a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by climate change, the Jigawa State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PAVEL), has embarked on the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Policy for the state. 

The two days program which held in Kano on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th June, 2025, was attended by critical stakeholders that cut across government ministries, agencies, and civil society organizations. 

In his presentation, Professor Abdulhamid Adamu, a facilitator from federal university Dutse (FUD) said the policy development process is being driven by a stakeholder-driven approach, with representatives from government agencies and civil society organizations (CSOs) coming together to deliberate on key issues related to climate change in Jigawa State. 

"The stakeholders are working towards domesticating the national climate change policy to address the unique challenges posed by climate change in Jigawa state" He stated.

In his comment, the permanent secretary state ministry of environment Doctor Abdullahi Namadi said the proposed policy framework is expected to provide a roadmap for addressing the impacts of climate change in Jigawa State. Key areas of focus include: "The policy will emphasize the need for afforestation and reforestation efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change".

"A strong law will be put in place to prevent deforestation and protect the state's natural resources. The policy will also promote the use of alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on charcoal and firewood".

In his part, the chairman social protection platfoam (JISOP) Shuaibu Musa Kafingana assured that the development of a Climate Change Policy for Jigawa State is expected to enhance the resilience of communities to the impacts of climate change. It will promote sustainable development in the state, while protecting the environment and natural resources.

He said the policy is also expected to improve the livelihoods of citizens, while also contributing to national and global efforts to address climate change.

Mr. Adejimobi Fashola a pace representative also a facilitator said the policy on Climate change control is a significant idea that control the Climate change and challenges in any society. He then commended the level of participants towards their contributions and dedication in acheiving the desired objectives. 

According to Fashola, with the support of stakeholders, the state can develop effective strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote a sustainable future. The policy is expected to provide a framework for addressing the impacts of climate change, while promoting sustainable development and improving the livelihoods of citizens.

Jigawa state shares borders with Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, and Katsina States. It also borders the Republic of Niger to the north. The Hadejia River runs through the central part of the state, influencing settlement and agriculture patterns.
